There are a million of small audio players available for Linux, yet none of them seem to be perfect.Although there are many audio players in linux, Amarok is a good choice for most users.There are plenty of other excellent alternatives, like the classic XMMS. Here I am listing Top 5 linux audio players based on thier popularity and also features.

1. Rhythmbox :::

Rhythmbox is the default audio player coming with the GNOME desktop environment.Rhythmbox’s free of cost.Playback from a variety of digital music sources is supported. Amarok is probably the most popular media player for Linux because it offers a lot of functionality.With features too numerous to list and more being added constantly, you’re sure to find some very hand uses.



New features in Amarok 2.1.1::

• Compilations with more than 60 artists are supported.
• Option to hide the context view.
• Applets are now laid out according to two criteria: either fixed height or flowing to fill the CV. No more slivers of applets visible at the bottom.
• Load contents of an m3u file if specified when running amarok from the command line. File must be local.
• Added large source emblem in current track applet.

Audacious is a GUI-based free software media player for POSIX systems, such as Linux.Audacious is a free media player for Linux or Linux-based systems. It exposes a large portion of its features to plugins, including all codecs. With Audacious, on most systems, a useful set of plugins is installed by default, providing the ability to play MP3, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files.Its advanced audio playback engine is considerably more powerful than GStreamer. 4.XMMS :::

XMMS is the most commonly used audio player for linux.The name being an acronym for X MultiMedia System. Most XMMS users take this to mean "X11 MultiMedia System" or "X Window System MultiMedia System"; the official interpretation of the 'X' is 'Cross-platform It's great. It's simple, yet has all the features you expect. Tons of good plugins are available, from great eye-candy to features like alarm clock for xmms.


XMMS2 (X-platform Music Multiplexing System 2) is a new generation of the XMMS audio player. It is a new design, written from scratch, separate from the XMMS codebase. While Peter Alm, one of the original authors of XMMS, was responsible for the initial design and coding of XMMS2 (late 2002 to early 2003), he has since passed on the responsibility of furthering the project to Tobias Rundström and Anders Gustafsson.

Songbird is an open-source customizable music player that's under active development.Songbird is a cross-platform, Mozilla-based music player with high ambitions.Among several features which stand out of the crowd is the ability to open tabs and an almost perfect web browser integration. SongBird supports add-ons and themes, which are called 'feathers' in Songbird.

One of the many perks of being a Linux user is that you have plenty of excellent software to choose from.
